Liminal Space

All things that exist hold within them the tension of two parallel worlds and the point where they meet: the space between destiny and choice; density and emptiness; black and white; hot and cold; some thing and no-thing; between abstract faith and concrete gods. It is up to us to decide whether the dual nature of these things are a blessing or a curse. This solo exhibition features a series of works by Sanitas Pradittasnee, the Thai artist best known for her thought-provoking, site-specific pieces that blend art, architecture, and installation. She is the founder of Sanitas Studio, a contemporary art practice that infuses their projects with profound landscape architecture know-how, resulting in a distinct style for which the studio is known and loved. These aesthetically compelling pieces contain within them hidden meanings and messages about spirituality, society, and their co-existence. Sanitas is drawn to the studies of history and faith. Such themes are interwoven into her architectural installations, often reflecting upon the relationship between the natural and the manmade. Seamlessly marrying contemporary architectural designs with old world beliefs, her pieces explore how enduring religious philosophies influence their ever-evolving educational, social, and cultural surroundings and vice versa. In doing so, her works reveal that a city’s architecture, environment, and culture are intrinsically and infinitely interconnected.

The prevailing challenge at the heart of any architectural installation is executing the conceptual brief in such a way that neither the beauty nor safety of the piece is compromised. The placement of systems and structures are functionally and aesthetically of equal importance. As such, the harmonious coordination of varying yet complementary skill sets and expertise is needed at every juncture, making teamwork an essential component in creating any large-scale architectural installation. It is this combined effort that ensures the beauty, experience, and safety of each installation is in balance. In addition to the core team, local engineers and architects familiar with each particular site are also consulted. This collective understanding of each piece’s unique environment allows for fully integrated and immersive installations that invite the audience to be a part of the work as opposed to its mere observer. What if running parallel to our day-to-day material existence is a barely traceable path, a liminal space that invites rest, experimentation, and the rediscovery of meaning in our lives? This is the query Sanitas plays with and poses to us, beckoning us to embark on a continual search for answers, experiments, and meaning.
